Located approximately 2.5 miles south of the Brisbane central business district, is the residential locality of Dutton Park. In 2016, Dutton Park recorded a population of more than 2,000.

In 1863, a large part of the area was surveyed by H.C. Rawnsley for government reserves, and a difficult terrain caused slow development in the suburb.

The name Dutton comes from the Queensland Minister for Lands, Charles Dutton, who also created the recreation reserve in 1884. The space reserved became known as 'Dutton's Park' which was later applied to its surrounding establishments and became a suburb name.

The Dutton Park State School was established in 1886.

The Boggo Road Gaol, which was opened on the 2nd of July 1883, served as a holding place for prisoners who were to be transferred to St. Helena Island. In 1903, a separate building was established next to the main prison to house the female inmates. After the Queensland Government knew about the living conditions of the prisoners, the female and male section was closed in 1989 and 1992, respectively. In 1996, the whole structure was demolished.

The suburb has a number of heritage-listed sites; Boggo Road Gaol, Gair Park, South Brisbane Cemetery and Kurrowah.
