Located approximately 8.94 miles south-southeast of central Brisbane is the residential and industrial suburb of Eight Mile Plains.

The origin of the name was unknown, but it was believed that Eight Mile Plains was given by the early settlers in the area. The name was based on the area's flat surface and its distance which is 8 miles to One Mile Swamp, which is now the suburb of Woolloongabba. This suburb is also one of Brisbane's first suburbs to be settled.

The Aboriginal group that inhabited the area before is obscure but according to one source, it could be the Chepara clan of Eight Mile Plains who spoke Turrbal. Another source insisted that the Yagarabal people were the ones who occupied the area first.

The suburb has two primary schools. These include; Warrigal Road State school and the Eight Mile Plains State School that was established on the 7th day of June 1869.

One of the heritage-listed sites in the suburb is the Hughesville at 2497 Logan Road. It was designed by George ThornHill Campbell-Wilson and was constructed by a local horse dealer, Alfred Hughes.
