The area was originally used for farming. Crops that were multiplied in the area were arrowroot, maize, sugar, potatoes and cotton. Urban development commenced in 1900s-1910s: a tennis club was established in 1909, and a bowling club was opened in 1912. The Ipswich Road tram was extended to Yeronga Park in 1915.

A public primary school and high school were established in the area in 1867 and 1960, respectively. The Yeronga Institute of TAFE was situated next to the High School, which is separated from the Primary School by the Yeronga Memorial Park.
The main commercial area in Yeronga is situated on the Fairfield road, which is the centre of the suburb. It caters services such as bakeries, cafes, liquor shops, clinics, bicycle shops, restaurants, fruit and vegetable stores, pharmacy, dentist, newsagent, boutiques, hair dresser and a fuel with a convenience store. Near the riverside lies a waste water treatment plant.
The notable individuals in the suburb are Lloyd Rees, an artist, Thomas Joseph Byrnes, the first Roman Catholic Premier of Queensland and Charles Hardie Buzacott, journalist, publisher and politician who owned the Yerong-lea house.
